No boring machines here Sectional view of the tunnel The control room... LED signs show energy consumption in KW. Unfortunately the one on the left was broken! Old control desk, these systems are now redundant 1960s switchgear in the control room, all still in use. Sadly soon to be replaced by modern computer controlled systems. Pictured is one of the large motors that drive the fans. Another shot of the fan drive motor & gearbox Fan drive gearbox & output shaft. The gearbox has 'David Brown Engineering ltd' stamped on it and is the original from the 1920s, as is the fan itself! Tried to get a shot of the exhaust fan in motion, but the camera flash wasn't man enough You can just make out the fan drive shaft, near top of picture New fangled control gear for the tunnel systems Another shot of the new control cabinets A Walkway inside the exhaust fan room Old style control cabinet, now decommissioned Top view of one of the fresh fresh air fans & drive units Fresh air fan motor & gearbox Another shot of the fresh air fan gearbox, this one stamped 'Metropolitan-Vickers, Manchester & Sheffield'. This unit was not in service when we visited Fresh air intake shaft The other fresh air fan, in service! You can just about make out the fan blades. Even at maximum revolutions the fans were very smooth - very little vibration could be felt! Another intake fan These fans are mounted on railway bogies, and operate on a worker standby principle - if the worker fails, it is automatically disengaged and rolled away, and the standby rolls in and takes over Asbesdos!
